Ashley + Caley’s DIY Civil Union | USA

Real Weddings / October 15, 2014

Ashley and Caley are super sweet. They both proposed to each other (yes two separate proposals) in a different but equally romantic ways – Caley proposed via flash mob while Ashley later proposed surrounded by rose petals and candle light.

They were lucky enough to be the 8th same-sex couple to sign their civil union in Colorado on May 1st, 2013. Even though their wedding wasn’t until August of that year, it was important to them both to sign that paper before Colorado had the chance to overturn Civil Unions in the state.

Their wedding was mostly DIY, from make-up to centrepieces, aisle decorations, arch décor, save the dates, invites and party favours.

Ashley tells us, “The most memorable moment at our wedding for Caley was the first touch. She was so excited and anxious and my touch hiding behind a wall was so real to both of us. My favourite moment was our first look. We were outside in a beautiful fairytale setting. She touched my shoulder and I knew that my wife was behind me looking perfect. I will never forget that moment in my life.”

Their photographer Haley Carnefix did an amazing job at capturing all the moments of the day.

Tips from Ashley + Caley:

“One of my tips for future brides and grooms is to give yourself plenty of time to plan your wedding. We had a year but it felt like a month. I would also suggest doing any and every crafty thing yourself. It makes it that much more special and it is much cheaper. One major thing I would say is wait until the very last minute to create a seating chart. Plans change last minute and creating a seating chart 7 different times is annoying. Leave the set up and food to a vendor. Invite ALL of your loved ones because I promise you they will be the ones that make it memorable. I would suggest doing a first look to get the pictures out of the way and because it was such an unknown incredible feeling that first look will give you. Choose your bridal party carefully and don’t regret or feel forced to pick certain people. Keep in touch with your vendors through the process and make sure they are up to date with any changes that may have happened. Last piece of advice: your partner will be with you forever. That person should be your best friend, partner in crime, soul mate, dream person, and the ending to your movie. Love is love and I have found mine.”

Lara is a bit of dark horse. She is a wedding photographer, a video editor, a motorcycle riding, hot chocolate connoisseur who was once a ballerina. WOAH?! Yeah, you heard me. And @ F yeah, no one really knows what she does. Maybe she looks after all the social media, marketing and being that final swing vote on large F* Yeah decisions. Maybe she’s the king of the music playlists and maybe she’s the one that always manages to look busy even when she’s really actually doing nothing. Maybe.
