Beth + Rebecca’s surprise marriage proposal shoot | Ireland

Portraits / November 19, 2015

This Monday 16 November (2015) same-sex marriages were officially recognised in the Republic of Ireland. Woo hoo! So what a better way to kick off this announcement but with a sweet little marriage proposal from Dublin.

Cue Beth (the proposee) and Rebecca’s (the proposer) surprise proposal.

Their photographers, Jess and Karolyn from Honey and the Moon Photography, fondly remember how it all began…
“A wee while ago Rebecca got in touch with us to see if we could photograph her surprise proposal to her girlfriend Beth. As far as Beth knew they were in Dublin to see Ben Howard. When they arrived at the hotel their room wasn’t ready (a rouse planned by Rebecca), so to kill time they had to go for a walk which ended at the pavilion in St. Stephens Green where we were waiting to catch the moment happen.”

About Beth + Rebecca

“We’ve been together for one year – It’s been a bit of a whirlwind romance, but ‘When you know, you know’, as they say!

I [Beth] began training Rebecca just over a year ago; usually I don’t mix business with pleasure but she was the exception – I fell for her instantly! We just clicked and the rest is history!”

How the proposal went down

Beth: “I was blissfully unaware that Rebecca was going to propose, but had a sneaking suspicion something was up as she was carrying a bag with her everywhere, which she never does!! When she pulled out a scrapbook of all our moments together it made my heart melt and I thought this was the surprise she had been talking about! When she got down on one knee, after I’d finished reading it, it was like a dream come true and I burst into tears!! It was one of the happiest moments of my life!! The setting was perfect and the sun was shining, it’s a day I’ll never forget!”

Rebecca: “I was a bag of nerves the day of the proposal; all sorts of scenarios were running through my mind – mainly, losing the ring! I had had a secret coffee meeting with the Honey & The Moon girls beforehand to discuss whereabouts in Dublin I planned to pop the question, St Stephen’s Green is a popular place in Dublin and it seemed ideal. I had put together a scrapbook of everything we had done as a couple, photographs, concert tickets etc., and wrote most of my proposal on the last page. After she had read the last sentence, I got down on one knee – thankfully, she said yes! I had booked a table in our favourite restaurant, which was nearby, where we celebrated with champagne before going to the concert that night – happiest day of my life so far.”

On the shoot and their photographers

Beth: “I had no idea what was happening and wondered if the photographers were just students as they were clicking away standing right next to us! When Rebecca got down on one knee it all made sense and made everything so much more special! The girls were so lovely and I was delighted with how the photographs turned out.”

Rebecca: “The girls from Honey and the Moon were brilliant and we couldn’t be happier with the photographs. It wasn’t the usual request, essentially hiding whilst taking photographs, but they seemed as excited about it as I was and it all worked perfectly – they even had tissues on hand as I’d predicted Beth might get a bit tearful! Couldn’t recommend them enough.”

On their wedidng plans

Beth + Rebecca: “We are having a Spiritual Ceremony in Bellinter House, County Meath, in February 2016. It’s a really quirky venue, with fantastic staff, which we both fell in love with as soon as we got there – Beth provisionally booked the date with no discussion whatsoever! It’ll be quite a small, laid back affair, with our nearest and dearest – and plenty to drink!”

Most memorable moment (obviously proposal included)

Beth: “From the moment we got to St. Stephen’s Green, to the moment Rebecca proposed!! We then went for a lovely meal in ‘The Pig’s Ear’ to celebrate with lots of champagne, before going back to the Hampton Hotel where we stayed that night – everything was perfect!”

Rebecca: “The whole day really! From waiting for Beth to get to the last page of the scrapbook, to getting down on one knee and her saying ‘Yes!’; to posing for the photographs and celebrating, all before going to the Ben Howard concert and dancing the night away. I loved every second of it!”

Congratulations girls on your engagement AND we’re prioud as punch to pre-congratulate you on making your marriage legal next year, F YEAH!!!

Fun facts: I'm a "loud" little Latin gurl. I heart my label maker as much as I do my partner. I also like red things, leg-day and red velvet everything. My daily vocab includes "have you eaten?", "I love you" and "I farted"... not all at once or in that order. If I'm not talking to you about feelings I'd be helping you organise something.
