Everyone meet today’s F* Yeah genderqueer couple from Portland, Em and Jill… which is also where their engagement shoot took place. But a little more of that later.
These two super sweet humans’ love is completely and utterly infectious. They share many things together… rock-climbing, swimming, art-making, goofying around and matching avocado tattoos!
Em and Jill met through the Portland Poetry slam and then quickly began dating. They have been together since April last year. “We realized quickly that we wanted many of the same things in life: a family, build a home, and travel. It felt too good to be true to not have to compromise on any big life dreams. We moved in together in January and are happily nesting and wedding planning and working on getting our cats to like each other.” Haha.
“We spent our whole first Summer on the beaches of Sauvie Island so it seemed natural to take photos there. It’s gorgeously green with old farms, natural preserves and miles of river beaches. Clarke [the photographer] also lives on the island, so that also made it an easy decision. She is very well acquainted with the area and knows how to really capture the beauty of it all. We took off our shoes and walked in the sand. It all felt so natural and easy.”
Em: “I’d actually been walking around with the ring in my pocket for a while, waiting for the
right time. I was also making this book of photos and letters and poems and thoughts and in the back of it I’d actually carved a space for the ring to go. Finally when I got that [dream] job I thought it would be the perfect excuse to say we should go out to our favorite fancy restaurant called Bamboo Sushi and I snuck in the book under my jacket. Then, once we’d ordered I just kind of pulled it out awkwardly and put it right in front of them. They read through it, and the last page said two things, ‘Jill will you marry me?’ and underneath it said ‘lift here’ and once you did, the ring was sitting there tied to a ribbon.”
“They immediately looked at me all teary (I was a sweaty mess!) and said ‘yes yes yes’ and right then the server came over took one look and walked away! Then as I was kind of patting myself on the back for successfully proposing without dissolving into an awkward pile of nerves Jill turned around and pulled a ring box out of their bag right then and there and just placed it in front of me! Needless to say we both smiled till it hurt that night :)”
Bowties were the first gifts that Em and Jill bought for each other so they decided on utilising these, not only in this shoot, but also using that as their wedding theme. How awesome is that?!
“Both of our rings were purchased from Etsy, and the main stone on both is Moonstone. They both also feature recycled diamonds and sapphires to incorporate both of our birthstones.”
“Clarke was amazing! She was friendly and soft-spoken while being able to both steer our silliness and allow us to be ourselves and be natural on camera. Clarke was able to capture us in intimate moments that we’d never had captured before on camera. We didn’t feel overly posed or stiff and we were able to be comfortable and just have fun! Part of what made our shoot so special was having an incredible time together, and I think everyone can tell when they look at the photos.”
Em and Jill are sweet, fun and adorable goofballs who found one another amongst poetry, literally. I get all warm and fuzzy looking at their images because I feel like their love has made the world that little bit brighter. Congrats Em and Jill and thank you for sharing your story xx.
