Luke and Wout.
The sweetest boys you’ll ever meet.
I mean, they are really tough and manly and strong and stuff ;)
Describing themselves as Gay Goth Leather Viking Bikers, you can see why we had to feature these guys!
They live in Belgium and had their legal wedding there, but since Luke is a Melbourne boy they wanted to have a ceremony there as well to celebrate with their Aussie friends and family.
They rode around Melbourne before their ceremony for an awesome portrait session taken by Lara Luz, making use of all that Melbourne had to offer.
They had an intimate backyard ceremony and reception with friends and family filling the day/evening with nothing but love.
The boys have been together since 2005 and it wasn’t until 2012 that Wout decided to make an honest man out of Luke.
“January 25, 2012. One of our favourite bands (VNV Nation) was playing in Brussels and we had tickets. We were both quite excited but having seen them several times before, it wasn’t like it was a totally new experience. So I was a little surprised at how anxious Wout seemed to get there. He was really trying to rush me out of the house and I was like “what’s the rush? The doors open at 20:00 and there is another band on first, so we don’t have to kill ourselves to get there.” Nonetheless, we got there early and again, I was surprised that Wout was drinking much more quickly than I was, since normally I am the lush. Anyway, the night proceeded and eventually VNV came on. About 40 minutes or so into their set, the lead singer asked the controller to bring the lights up on the audience and then asked where Wout was. We were right near the front and so he walked over and said that he had been contacted by Wout who wanted to say something. Believe it or not, I still had no clue at that point! (At previous concerts, it had become common for members of the audience to yell out to Ronan – the singer – to “take his pants off!”, so I stupidly proffered that as the comment that I thought Wout might want to make). So then Wout took the mic and stated that after 7 years it was time to make an honest man out of me, so would I marry him? (It was only 6 at that point, but I wasn’t going to quibble).
Ronan then asked the crowd what they thought. It was quite amazing to have 1000 people happily cheering in support! He then asked what I thought and of course I said yes! The band then played our favourite song, which they had not intended to perform that night. Seems Wout had been quite busy beforehand, contacting the band via Facebook and arranging everything, and even logging on to my account to delete wall posts that might have given the game away. After the show, he presented me with an engagement bracelet – a leather bracelet with ‘troll beads’ on it spelling out his name (he had a matching one with my name on it). People kept coming up to congratulate us and say hello. It was a really beautiful and totally unexpected surprise and I was so proud.”
“OK, I know this is going to sound cheesy on a wedding blog sponsored by photographers, but I really cannot stress enough how important it is to find the right photographer. The results speak for themselves. But make sure it is someone that ‘gets’ you. The photographer we had for the Belgium wedding was undoubtedly competent, but we simply had no connection with the guy (he was a last minute substitute when the original guy injured his eye days before the wedding). What we ended up with was a mediocre collection of wedding snaps that could, for the most part, have been snapped on a good phone camera. By contrast, the images and experience we had with Lara was breathtaking. Originally, we were going to buy a few disposable cameras and put them around the place for guests to randomly snap pics during the day and night. But now we have a wonderful set of beautiful photographs that, because they are so good and Lara so talented at capturing the essence of things, instantly transport us back to the day each time we see them. It is the one thing that you need to get right.”
