Today’s f* yeah wedding comes to you from a little spot in Arkansas, Park on the River in Maumelle to be exact.
Lisa (in the whimsical dress) and her wife Mariel (in the relaxed playsuit) were married on a lovely rainy day along the river. But not before they had a super sweet ‘first look’. “We did not see each other on our wedding day until the ‘first look’. Having this moment before the ceremony was special and made us both less nervous.”
Lisa and Mariel got together after a somewhat rocky first meeting, Lisa explains:
“We originally met at a mutual friend’s birthday party. Before the party, Mariel asked her friend who this certain girl was on the party’s Facebook event invite list, because Mariel thought that I was cute. Mariel was informed that I was taken and I came to the party with my then girlfriend.”
“Almost a year later Mariel realized that I had become single and sent me a Facebook message. After messaging for a couple of days, Mariel asked me on a coffee date and the rest is history! That was five and a half years ago.
We believe that opposites truly do attract… we can be completely yin and yang.”
When Lisa and Mariel got engaged they knew that they would face some challenges while living in the South. “The most important thing to us about getting married was celebrating our love with our closest family and friends. So we said F* IT! We are going to have a wedding and enjoy our day as much as any other couple would whether it was legalized at the time or not. So we did and it was fantastic.”
The girls decided on a whimsical and romantic DIY wedding. They chose light colours which they complimented with black and white accents too. “Our wedding decor was all DIY. We had lots of help and support from our bridal parties and families in making our day come together.”
“Our ceremony was short and sweet: lasting about 15 minutes, including our personal vows.”
“After the ceremony we took some quick photos and moved on to the reception. We really just wanted everyone to have a good time. We had a first dance, cut the cake, played ‘the shoe game’ and danced the night away.”
Um… check out their dessert table! Nom, nom, nom.
“We were in Chicago apartment hunting and were thrilled to hear the news just a month after our ceremony. We had been planning on getting a marriage license when we moved to Illinois but we were able to do it in Arkansas where we are both from, which was really great!”
“Her talent shines through with her eye for natural light photography. That being said all of our planning started with photography!
Our favorite thing about working with Stephanie was that we genuinely had a good time with her. She’s so laid back and makes you feel totally comfortable.”
“If you plan on doing a lot of DIY projects, do those projects as they come to you and early on. Have them all done at least a month before your wedding day so you can tackle the little random things you may have not anticipated.
Most importantly… don’t sweat the small stuff! When your wedding day comes, just have a good time! Our ceremony venue moved the day of due to flooding and it rained on us, but we laughed it off and enjoyed the day. It’s pretty remarkable having all of your people in one place just for you.. so don’t be a Bridezilla :P”
The girls will be celebrating their first wedding anniversary at the end of the month, so show them some love and join me in congratulating these beautiful humans.
